 2006 World Series Tickets

The historical importance of the 2004 mlb baseball season can be summed up in 4 words: The Boston Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox won the world series.
OK, there was more than that. But the boston Red Sox made baseball history or remade basbeall history in a way that was, finally, more to their own liking. It doesn't have to get much bigger than this. In fact, it probably can't get much bigger than this.

The Boston Red Sox accomplished the previously impossible against their hereditary enemies, the New York Yankees, when they came back from a 3-0 deficit to win the American League Championship Series to capture the world series. Then, ending an 86-year drought, they not only won a World Series, they dominated a World Series, sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, who had baseball's best regular season record.

Watching it was even better. MLB Baseball is, after all, a baseball game of possibilities. From April through early October, there are 162 possibilities for Christmas, and those are followed by month of post-season possibilities for a Christmas.

In the past, the Boston Red Sox seemed only to have possibilities only for ultimate heartbreak, particularly against the Bronx Bombers. But this October, they reopened all the positive possibilities, long-dormant as they might have been. The fact that the process included triumph against the impossible odds -- the 3 game deficit, the New York Yankees well, the comprehensive improbability only added to the complete sweetness.

Along the way, Boston Red Sox Nation turned into Boston Red Sox Planet. The global baseball community everywhere but New York Yankees, in this case warmed to the exploits of this baseball team. And what a baseball team it was, not only on the mound and in the baseball field and at the plate. This baseball team was made up of self-styled "idiots" a playful, joyful, ebullient bunch, a world away from the age-old, if flawed, stereotype of the taciturn New Englander.

Perhaps only a baseball team with this sort of devil-may-care approach to baseball could have risen from the depths against a team that was supposed to beat them this year and every baseball year. But in the end, the Boston Red Sox reminded us of a basic truth: It's a baseball game. It's supposed to be fun. It's not that much fun when you're down 3 games in a best of 7 world series, but if you keep the whole thing in perspective, maybe everything is possible. Maybe even more enjoyment.

The Boston Red Sox were good for the baseball game, which was good for America. Everybody except Yankee fans thanked them for proving that the impossible is sometimes only a concept, not a fact. They were never really cursed, you know. But now, they are blessed.

The ultimate triumph was reserved, at last, for the Boston Red Sox, but it was a fine campaign elsewhere, too. You can pick your own highlights and heroes; there were more than enough to go around. Let me settle on 3 more fine things, and one ongoing source of dismay, to characterize this baseball season.
